I Decide My Future Nationality Upon Anthem Alone

OK. What's it to be? Shall I be a Canadian, living in "the true north, strong and free" (this idea makes me quite tearful, I like it so):*

Or shall I remain British, therefore able to "confound their politics and scatter their knavish tricks"?**

I know! I shall have dual nationality!! Brilliant.

* it is different for French Canada and in a great many excellent ways, but that is for another day.

** and do not get me started on the whole 'Canada is part of the Commonwealth' malarkey.

The Canadian anthem does come with truly splendid organ instrumental line which is an important factor. However, I would point out that I personally have heard it sung, with gusto, "Oh Ca-na-DUH!!!"

On the other hand, the British version has smiting, and what is a national anthem without smiting?

Never a truer word said - you can't beat a good smiting.

Good Lord, I feel like one of Pavlov's dogs. As soon as the second one began, I had an overpowering urge to stand to attention and shed a prideful tear. God Save the Queen!

Ack! That is an affront to our anthem! Gah! Horrid singer and badly played organ. Bleurgh! And it doesn't have the bit about the brilliant exploits. Whoever recorded that should be taken out and shot for treason. Because we are all about the exploits and we are brilliant! Or, at the very least, rather shiny.

The beauty is, as a Canadian we get to sing both, although I have to confess I have never heard the 2nd and 3rd verses of God Save the Queen before. They are excellent! Scattering of knavish tricks and confounding of politics! What more could you ask for in an anthem?

And the opening drum roll WITH CYMBALS AND DRAMATIC PAUSE is just incredible!

And the best bit is the...

But we're not a member of the Commonwealth?

*lower lip quivers*

Has anyone told the queen? She's going to be very annoyed.
