Day 199: I Am At Work

I am at work! In an office, on a canal! There are desks and people who give you big metal Apple laptops. There is also a cupboard with pencils in it and pencil sharpeners to keep your pencils as sharp as your mind must be.

It is like the United Nations! Everyone is very nice, and from a different country, but mainly the Canada, and the bit of the Canada where they speak French I do not understand. This pleases me, as it reminds me of pathologists.

This afternoon, I am to buy a bicycle and sign some documents for an "apartment", as I believe they are called here.

Now I must go and do some work (whilst remaining essentially "Non-Working" in my heart).

How many rooms does your appartement have?

I hope, in your spirit of recently-learned economy, you will buy a secondhand bicycle (preferably one dredged from a canal) as it will, inevitably be lost, stolen or strayed within one week.

Don't forget: sometimes they don't have real brakes - you have to pedal backwards; get a bell; get insurance.

monkeymother! Did you by any chance attend the same school of mothering as my own dear ma who would say EXACTLY the same things to me were I off to buy a bicycle in the Amsterdam? It's uncanny. And also, how do you have eyes in the back of your head AND in other countries? I have always wondered.

dear fiona, being a nagging old bag just comes naturally, and the eyes in the back of the head thing is just a wonderful gift.

I'll be sitting here, praying the rosary to make sure you don't cross over to the Dark Side (aka working).

Yes the backwards pedalling must be remembered, otherwise you are catapaulted over the handlebars, danerous around water!

Are you sure you're not in the Hague trying war criminals?

Friday. What an excellent choice of day for your first day back at work. How could you possibly be anything other than non-working with a one day week? Respect to you.

Maybe best to wait until at least Monday before liberating the contents of the stationary cupboard. Entirely up to you though.

I hope your non working 'working' status does not stop you posting. I have come out of lurker status to say that I think your blog is a thing of joy - and I would miss it - a lot!!

Ahem, I should also introduce myself as so recently emerging from lurker status, and having the Cheek! to ajoin myself to your 'non-working' club, yesterday. Go for the stationary today and then they won't suspect it's the 'newbie'. cheers, kaz.

Tea and Cake: Welcome, hello, how nice to have you. You may be in my club, of course.

Nuala - come into the light, my dear. Cup of tea? I will still be posting, as you will see, although I think the quality is going to deteriorate, and fast.

hhh - I've got 2 pencils so far and my eye on a red hole punch.

Apprentice, Fiona, MM - the bicycle (Glorie) is absolutely magnificent and you stop her by pedalling backwards. It is easier than multi-gear nonsense.

Liam - it's OK, it's all OK.

Anna - 2, and one of them's got a sofabed. Yeah?
