I hadn't. But now I have. And I find myself just a little, you know...speechless. So wrong and yet so right.
The truth is that the chimpanzees on ice are so good that there's just no point posting them or doing anything like that. You just sort of shrug and go, "oh look at that, chimpanzees skating to the theme from Rocky, bound to be fucking ace", and it is, and then you feel a bit deflated about the endless predictability of living.
The aceness of chimpanzees, skating on ice, wearing 70s co-ordinated apres ski ensembles, to the theme from Rocky is so predictable that it does leave you feeling a little empty. Is there nothing left in this life that is surprising? Oh the ennui...
I'm not saying it's not magnificent and surprising. What I'm saying is that it is so obviously going to be fucking ace that to say "look at this everyone, it is fucking ace!!!" feels like a gigantic cop-out. Like the world would look at the chimpanzees in Fair Isle apres-ski ensembles and the world would say, "of course it is fucking ace, what are you trying to say? That you are clever for noticing it?", and you would say "no, I am not clever, I just wanted you to see this and enjoy it as much as I did and do every time I watch it", and the world would say, "well of COURSE I'm going to enjoy it", and it would sort of go on like that, with you trying to defend your 70s co-ordinated chimps against the imagined condescension of the world.
Aaah, I see what mean.
Doesn't it reflect well on the world at large that we expect to enjoy the spectacle of skating chimps in co-ordinated ensembles, though? It would be so much worse if we were to see a link to ice skating chimps and think, "I'm not going to bother with that because I just saw a video of a kitten sneezing last week and I don't think anything could top that."
That would be a tragedy.
