I share our 'first dance'

I have heard on the grapevine that it is customary for the 'groom' (i.e, man) to take the 'bride' (i.e., the lady) in his arms on the dancefloor before their other friends/family/pets break out in a cold sweat to Come On Eileen (or this for the Quebec contingent).

But what to choose? So far, we are refusing to do this stupid thing, but if we do there is only one song is tempting us, and it is this!!!

Ooh, ooh, I know the answer to this one. If I ever get married again (and having already done it twice, this is, hopefully, unlikely) and I had a full meringue frock wedding with first dance malarkey, then, absolutely without doubt I would choose to have Siouxsie and the Banshees 'The Last Beat of My Heart'. It's not fast, it's a waltz, the lyrics make me cry every time, it's gorgeous. Our first dance was Enola Gay by OMD. Too fast for our dancing to require any merit, or touching. And the nuclear bleakness worked too.

I have always thought that "Should I stay or should I go" would be an amazing first dance song at a wedding reception. Either that or Elvis' "Suspicious minds". But I appreciate irony. A lot of people do not.

Much as I admire the Clash, I have tried waltzing round the sitting room to this and it turns into a mad polka, so you might have to rethink this one - or not?

I favour AC/DC's Highway to Hell. Also hopeless for waltzing, but the lyrics of the first verse are very fine and you could do a sort of non-dancer's determined stomp round the dance floor.

And no on will feel the need to cry.

I'd recommend 'The Wombles' for a first dance. You can't go wrong with 'wombling along' can you???
