Tomorrow I fly to Washington (District of Columbia, not the other one). I am there for a few days while a veterinary research pathologist I know goes to a conference with 20,000 other people, all of whom will be talking about cardiovascular something or others.
In the day he will be in a white coat going "yes" a lot to people and sitting in seminars listening to people talking. I, par contre, will be lolling about in an hotel with the whole of Washington (DC) at my disposal!
So come on then. Three whole days by myself, in Washington (DC), with good weather. What should I do? (No jokes about slapping President Bush if you please! He is a cock, I know, but I do not want to be arrested and deported.)
I am particularly interested in:
1. Where to get cake
2. Where to get a good ladywax
3. Pictures and shit
4. Where to get cake
5. Old shit.
Pip pip!

hmmm. it's been years since i was in washington. i met colin powell! you could do that. maybe.
all i can suggest is the typical tourist stuff. cake? you're on your own.
happy birthday, monkeyshines.
I can heartily recommend au bon pain (pronounced without any hint of a French accent). It's near the Uni, which is quite probably near where you'll be.
They do cake. But specialise in soup in a bread bun. Yes, you heard right. Soup IN a bread bun. Genius. Pure genius.
Ooh, now, Washington is one of the few places outside of my home that I've been to - if only I'd eaten more cake while I was there (and had a memory that doesn't leak like a cheap houseboat)...
If you manage to find a place called The Cheesecake Factory then please report back - I was very excited at the prospect of going there myself but singularly failed to do so.
Aside from that most of my recommendations would concern the relative merits of different comic shops which might, I suppose, be of less interest to you.
I think there was a good Modigliani in one of the museums, and the curvy sculpture museum was quite good. Have fun.
NWM dear, I simply cannot imagine what I would do for several days in the Nation's Capitol. The Smithsonian? There must be a cake shop... and as for ladywaxes, I can think of a few people in Washington I'd like to give one of those to.
Yes, the Smithsonian! Lots to see there.
Unfortunately, I don't remember having any cake when I was in Washington, which either means I didn't or it just wasn't very memorable cake.
The pretzels sold by the street vendors were good, though.
Oh dear. Happy Belated Birthday.
Cake hmmm.. never found cake, but... places I can suggest.
Visit all the memorials. Stand by the Lincoln and pretend you're on West Wing.
Library of Congress. They have books.
The Frick.
Pick a Smithsonian.
Walk through the Museum of Natural History even if it's just the first floor to see the whales and dinosaurs. Okay, so they're bones, but the models are fun.
There's just so much to do.
You're already back in Quebec, aren't you? Sorry.
Freer. The Frick is in New York. I can never keep these two straight in my mind.
I once got a cake called a bear claw from a place just by the zoo gates. I was a bit disappointed that it was only a danish pastry and not an actual bear's hand... but it was still nice.
I'm afraid that we're rather lacking in the cake department-DC is more known for our Ethiopian food and Peruvian chickens. If you're looking for some very good, somewhat chi-chi Indian food downtown do go to Rasika. Teaism has very good teas (very many asian varieties as well as a very good masala chai). They're very well known for their salty oat cakes-their cooked foods leave something to be desired. If you are in to tea houses, there is one in Georgetown called Ching Ching Cha (I think that it's Taiwanese), it's very cute and serene. You've picked the best time of year to visit, autumn is just gorgeous around here so enjoy.
Freer - isn't it lovely? The other Asian one 90% empty. National Gallery had more Dutch painting in it than the Netherlands. Blue Duck Tavern very good indeed. As was the room service. Capitol Hill like something that has been left out of a giant snowshaker. Mall long. Lincoln memorial contained entire population of Japan. It was hot, it wa good. Georgetown was pretty, but no time for the lovely food there.
But thank you for all recommendations. If YOU go to Washington, the cabs are cheap and plentiful and there are 385 branches of fucking Starbucks. Also, the round-city bus tour (which I always do, no laughing if you please, there is no better way to get the sense of a place) is fucking expensive but quite good a the drivers drive too fast.
Oh yeah the curvy museum was absolutely brilliant - it had 'the way things go' in it, which looks like the original and better versin of the honda ad - look it up on youtube, there's a bit of it on there but the original is half an hour long.
Oh yes and the weather was lovely, J, you were right; it is beautiful.
Sadly DCA is full of twats shouting self-importantly into their mobiles and gathering like flies round shit around the power points so they can charge up their twatberries..
