I have just checked my email. Every email I have saved, or have sent (and saved), or have filed away in a special folder because it is Important, has disappeared.
This is Bad. Some of them are about work. Some of them are important because they are from people I like. Some of them would have allowed me to do my tax return. I have sent an email entitled 'HELP' to my chum with the server.
I am going to drink rum and forget. I think I should have gmail, but I don't know how.
Fuck.

I'll be happy to send you a gmail invitation if you like.
My sympathy, hope you get your mail back. I rely totally on email and my computer and never keep anything printed out unless I have to
You are v. kind. Porny Boy (his given name, I think), has already very kindly Done The Honours. A friend is ferreting about in Shoreditch somewhere trying to mend the server. It's working, but all the old stuff has GONE.
Oh well. It may be a Sign.
Question: who in God's name changes a server without telling the people whose email relies on it working properly? It is Insane.
Yikes, poor you. G mail is easy, I'll send you an invite.
Darling A, PBC has sorted me aaaaht. I am currently labouring in Hotmail and flirting with mac.com in a slightly dirty way.
Hmm, I see I am too late with my offer of a gmail invite! But let me tell you it will change your life. You will love it as you never dreamed you could love an email account. It has a search facility so you can search your archived messages. And the mail box is the size of the Taj Mahal!
This important-document-loss thing happened to me, too, when my previous lovely iMac was stolen, and it was HORRIBLE.
Sympathies. (But leave mac.com alone!)
Everyone: you have been super-kind. Thank you. I should have kept my distress to myself, rather than posting insanely.
Conclusion: the email (lucy@spiffin.net) is now reinstated, linked to my Apple email (not .mac), and all is well. And soon I shall be buying a large external hard drive to back everything up. Miss B, I am so used to Spiffin.net that I can't move to google, although I do now have a lovely gmail account thanks to PBC.
Daft thing is of course it hasn't made a blind bit of difference, except being sorry that I haven't got some lovely emails from people I like immensely, and a couple of useful but not life-threatening things.
